Life At Arley Colliery

Ransom Road

(c. 1926) A group of miners on the corner of Ransom Road, next to the site of St. Michael's Church, following the miner's strike of that year. Until the opening of 'The Fir Tree' pub in 1928 thirsty miners had to walk to the old village, send a runner to Ansley or purchase beer from Evan's Off-License on the corner of Ransom Road -- in which case they had to sit on the bank opposite to drink, this became known as the 'Long Bar'.

Arley Rescue Team

(c. 1920's) Arley Rescue Team, taken at Ansley Hall Colliery where the team were winners of the Ansley Cup. The gentleman in the background is Joe Phillips, the manager.

The gentleman on the left, Ted Warrington, died down the pit shortly after this photograph was taken.

Lamp Cabin

(c.1930) Miners outside the Lamp Cabin. The wooden steps to the right led to the offices of the colliery manager, Harry Bailey. Going "up the steps" referred to a man being sent for disciplinary action.

The buildings which were used as Arley Colliery's offices now house the Warwickshire Miners Rescue District Headoffice.
