Hill Top, Gun Hill & The New Estate

Hill Top

1905 -- 1910. The houses on Hill Top were built first, to accommodate those miners involved in the exploratory work (amongst them my Great Grandfather) -- including the sinking of the original, exploratory shaft -- at the colliery.

From this point the population of Arley increased rapidly.

Gun Hill

1910 -- 1912. Built as the first stage of housing in the development of this part of New Arley, the miners houses at Gun Hill are very similar to those at Hill Top. House 1 to 40 Gun Hill were known as the 'Sinkers Houses' as they housed the miners involved in the sinking of the shafts.

The bricks arrived by rail to the colliery sidings from the Knox family's brick and tile firm in Haunchwood, Nuneaton and were conveyed in tubs to the site by electric haulage up, what is now, Frederick Road.

The New Estate

1950 -- 1955. Although built in the early fifties this housing area is still known as the New Estate. These houses were built to be occupied by miners bought in when output was high in the fifties.
