Arley Growing Up

The boy to the extreme right of the top row in this photograph (1937) is my Grandfather aged twelve. Two years after this picture was taken he began working at the Arley Colliery, just as his Father had before him.

My Grandfather worked, as an underground electrician, at the pit until it closed in 1968. He was offered the chance to work at Baddesley Colliery but decided to turn down this job. In 1969 he began work at the Brown's Lane Jaguar plant, from where he retired in 1989.

My Grandfather grew up with Arley and its colliery, without him this study could never have begun.

Many Thanks To...

My family for all their help and support, particularly my Grandparents, Great Grandmother, Mother and Uncle Terry (who drew four great maps that, sadly, I can't scan in at the moment).
